Environment Agency Abu Dhabi Teams with TotalEnergies for Coastal Ecosystem Conservation

In line with the Year of Sustainability and the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has forged a partnership with TotalEnergies to initiate a comprehensive program aimed at conserving and restoring coastal ecosystems in the emirate. The agreement, signed by Her Excellency Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, and Samir Oumer, President of TotalEnergies EP United Arab Emirates and Total Energies Country Chair in the UAE, marks a significant step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change through environmental stewardship.

Under this collaboration, EAD and TotalEnergies will embark on a multifaceted approach that includes research, monitoring, and evaluation of Abu Dhabi’s coastal ecosystems. The initiative will focus on developing robust guidelines, methodologies, and cost-effective options for restoring these critical habitats. Central to the project is the deployment of innovative technologies and advanced restoration solutions, such as ROOT - three-dimensional models designed to mimic the root systems of mangrove trees. These models are intended to enhance coastal resilience by mitigating currents, resisting wave action, reducing beach erosion, and fostering biodiversity by attracting marine life.

The outcomes and achievements of this initiative will be integrated into the reporting framework for UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below water, underscoring the project's global significance in climate change mitigation, biodiversity preservation, and socio-economic benefits. EAD and TotalEnergies aim to position themselves as leaders in the international environmental community by sharing these outcomes globally.

Moreover, EAD plans to engage key stakeholders, including schools participating in its Sustainable Schools Initiative (SSI), to educate students about the importance of preserving coastal habitats and restoring Blue Carbon ecosystems. This educational outreach aims to cultivate future environmental leaders and advocates.

To amplify the project's impact beyond the UAE, EAD and TotalEnergies will convene an international conference on restoration and produce a documentary showcasing the project's achievements. This global outreach effort underscores their commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and best practices in coastal ecosystem management.

Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative in supporting Abu Dhabi's Climate Change Strategy and broader goals of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. She highlighted the critical role played by coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, seaweeds, and salt marshes, in sequestering carbon dioxide, protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity, and providing essential socio-economic benefits. Preserving and restoring these ecosystems is paramount, as they are among the most vulnerable and threatened worldwide.

Samir Oumer reiterated TotalEnergies' commitment to environmental stewardship, emphasizing their focus on assessing the health and seasonal dynamics of Abu Dhabi's coastal ecosystems. The project will analyze carbon sequestration rates and develop restoration guidelines applicable to local and regional Blue Carbon ecosystems. Oumer underscored the significance of their innovative ROOT project as a biomimetic solution for mangrove restoration, highlighting TotalEnergies' dedication to protecting the environment and contributing to sustainable development.
