India’s first solar mission, Aditya L1, is on track to reach its destination at the Lagrangian point L1, located 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, on January 6. This announcement was made by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S. Somanath during the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan, organized by Vijnana Bharati, an NGO focused on promoting science.
Launched on September 2 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota, Aditya L1 will be India’s first space-based observatory dedicated to studying the Sun from a halo orbit around L1. This strategic point allows the satellite to have a continuous and unobstructed view of the Sun.
Somanath detailed the next critical step for the mission upon reaching L1: “When Aditya L1 reaches the L1 point, we need to fire its engines to ensure it remains in the correct position. This maneuver will prevent the satellite from drifting further and will stabilize it in a rotational orbit around L1.” This positioning will enable Aditya L1 to gather crucial data on solar activities for the next five years.

The data collected by Aditya L1 will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of the Sun and its impacts on space weather, which is vital not only for India but for the global scientific community. Somanath emphasized the broader significance of the mission, highlighting how understanding solar phenomena can help predict and mitigate the effects of solar storms on Earth's satellite communications and power grids.
In his address, Somanath also touched on ISRO’s future plans, including the development of an Indian space station, as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision during the 'Amrit Kaal'. He underscored the importance of fostering innovation in the space sector and supporting the emergence of new players to build a robust space economy.
Somanath’s remarks encapsulated a vision of technological advancement and international collaboration, pointing to a future where India not only meets its scientific and technological aspirations but also contributes significantly to global knowledge and capabilities in space exploration.
