Inside Out 2 as First 2024 Film to Cross $1 Billion Worldwide

Inside Out 2" has achieved a monumental feat by surpassing $1 billion in global box office earnings faster than any animated film in history. Released on June 14, the Disney and Pixar sequel also marks the first film of 2024 to reach this milestone.

Directed by Kelsey Mann, "Inside Out 2" expands on the original storyline, following 13-year-old Riley as she grapples with new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, alongside the familiar characters of Joy, Fear, and Anger. The film features an ensemble cast including Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser, Kensington Tallman, June Squibb, with Amy Poehler and Phyllis Smith reprising their roles.

Domestically, the film grossed $151 million, surpassing "Dune: Part 2" for the biggest opening of the year. It also became the first film since last July's "Barbie" to exceed $100 million in its opening weekend. Holding the top box office position for three consecutive weekends, "Inside Out 2" has accumulated a global total of $1.015 billion.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for animated films, surpassing the lifetime gross of its predecessor, 2015's "Inside Out," which earned $859 million worldwide. Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, praised the film's rapid success, highlighting its appeal to global audiences and its role in revitalizing the 2024 box office.

"Inside Out 2" joins an elite group of 11 animated films to surpass $1 billion, alongside hits like "The Incredibles 2," "Finding Dory," and the "Toy Story" series. Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent awarded the sequel four stars, praising its humor and observations, noting that the film "might just save Pixar" with its charm and entertainment value.

The success of "Inside Out 2" has not only reinvigorated the box office landscape but also reaffirmed the enduring popularity of animated storytelling on the global stage.
