Protests erupted across Kenya as demonstrators condemned police brutality during widespread unrest over a withdrawn tax bill, demanding President William Ruto's resignation. Riot police deployed tear gas and clashed with stone-throwing protesters in Nairobi and other cities, marking the most intense unrest since clashes claimed lives a week earlier.
President Ruto's decision to abandon proposed tax hikes failed to quell the anger of the predominantly youth-led movement, organized largely through social media. What started as peaceful demonstrations turned violent, with reports of injuries and property damage. In Nairobi's business district, scenes of chaos unfolded as police dispersed protesters with force, leading to injuries and arrests.

Outside Nairobi, in Mombasa and other cities, protesters marched, chanting "Ruto must go!" and expressing frustration over high living costs and economic policies. Despite appeals for dialogue from Ruto, protesters remain defiant, accusing the government of neglecting public welfare in favor of economic reforms mandated by international lenders.
Activists, including prominent figures like Boniface Mwangi, blamed government-backed infiltrators for instigating violence to discredit the protests. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported 39 deaths linked to the demonstrations, mostly occurring during clashes near parliament on June 25.
In response to escalating tensions, State House communications director Gerald Bitok urged for calm and patriotism, while opposition leader Raila Odinga voiced support for the protesters' demands for systemic change and accountability.
The protests, initially sparked by proposed tax increases, have evolved into a broader movement against corruption and governance failures. Ruto, under pressure, directed fiscal adjustments to manage budget shortfalls but faced criticism for insufficient action on corruption allegations.
Amid calls for his resignation and accusations of mishandling the crisis, Ruto defended the police response and denounced violence as orchestrated by criminals within the protests. The situation remains volatile, with stakeholders calling for restraint and dialogue to address the underlying grievances driving the unrest across Kenya.
