In a sobering announcement, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has issued its annual climate report, warning of increasingly severe climate impacts in the country. China faces the prospect of hotter and more prolonged heatwaves, alongside erratic and heavier rainfall patterns, attributed directly to climate change. The CMA predicts that maximum temperatures nationwide could rise significantly within the next three decades, with eastern China and Xinjiang facing the brunt of these changes.
Last year saw record-breaking national average temperatures, exacerbating issues like glacial retreat and melting permafrost in northwestern China, as highlighted in the CMA's "Blue Book" report. Yuan Jiashuang, vice-director of the CMA's National Climate Centre, emphasized China's vulnerability to global climate shifts, predicting that extreme heat events once considered rare could become biennial occurrences by the end of this century. Similarly, rainfall patterns are expected to double and become increasingly unpredictable if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated.

The current weather outlook indicates persistently high temperatures across most regions of China for the upcoming months, indicating a second consecutive summer of extreme heat. Already, southern regions are grappling with torrential rains and flooding, while northern and central areas have seen record-breaking heatwaves, posing threats to agriculture and straining electricity supplies.
March to May of this year recorded the highest average temperatures since reliable records began in 1961, underscoring the severity of the ongoing climate crisis. Looking ahead, the CMA also forecasts the possibility of two typhoons making landfall in mainland China in July, with potential impacts on coastal areas.
Last year's experience with typhoons Doksuri and Haikui serves as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of such storms, which unleashed unprecedented rainfall and triggered widespread flooding, necessitating large-scale evacuations. As China navigates these escalating climate challenges, there is mounting pressure for robust adaptation measures to mitigate future risks and safeguard vulnerable communities and ecosystems from the impacts of climate change.
