A souvenir shop at Chennai airport has been exposed as a front for a sophisticated gold smuggling operation orchestrated by a Sri Lankan syndicate. Mohammed Sabir Ali, the owner of the shop named Airhub in the airport's departure lounge, was recruited into the syndicate despite lacking any prior retail experience. The syndicate, based in Abu Dhabi, facilitated Ali's acquisition of the shop lease with a payment of ₹70 lakh.
Over a span of two months, Ali and his seven employees facilitated the smuggling of 267 kg of gold valued at ₹167 crore. The operation involved receiving gold from transit passengers through their souvenir shop and passing it to receivers outside the airport, earning them a hefty commission of ₹3 crore.
The scheme came to light on June 29 when Customs officials intercepted 1 kg of gold powder at the shop, leading to the arrest of one of Ali's employees and the transit passenger involved in smuggling. Subsequently, Ali and his associates were apprehended by authorities.

Further investigation by Customs revealed that all eight members of the group possessed identity cards issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), despite being only contract employees. This allowed them to bypass security checks, raising concerns about potential lapses in airport security protocols.
The Customs department is now conducting a thorough probe into the syndicate's operations and the lapses that enabled the smuggling ring to operate undetected within the airport premises.
