Russian Firm Announces Production of Armour-Piercing Tank Rounds in India

Rostec, Russia's state-owned corporation, announced on Thursday that its weapons export unit has facilitated the production of armour-piercing rounds in India for Russian-manufactured battle tanks. The initiative, part of ongoing defense collaboration, precedes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Russia on July 8-9 for talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Known as "Mango" projectiles, these rounds are specifically designed for use with India's T-72 and T-90 tanks, which are equipped with advanced armor protection systems. According to Rostec, these projectiles enhance the capability to engage modern tanks that feature composite armor. India operates various versions of these tanks within its armed forces.

In addition to the armour-piercing rounds, Rostec outlined plans to localize the production of gunpowder in India. This move aligns with the Indian government's strategy to increase domestic manufacturing of foreign defense products, aiming for greater self-reliance in defense procurement.

The longstanding defense partnership between Russia and India has seen Moscow as a major supplier of military equipment to the Indian armed forces, underscoring strategic ties in defense and security cooperation between the two nations.
