Active Abu Dhabi, a collaborative initiative by Emirates Foundation and PureHealth, has officially launched the Walk 1000 community health initiative aimed at promoting health and fitness throughout Abu Dhabi. The initiative kicks off on November 2, with backing from the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Police, and the UAE Ministry of Defence. It is further supported by sponsors including Mubadala, Ali & Sons, Al Masaood Energy, Aldar Properties, Space42, and EDGE.
The Walk 1000 challenge consists of several categories, with the flagship event being an ambitious 1,000-kilometer walk—equivalent to about 24 marathons. This extensive route will begin in Al Sila, traverse the Liwa desert, and pass the majestic Jabel Hafeet, concluding in Al Wathba after a scenic journey through Al Ain. A team of ten athletes will participate in this remarkable journey, averaging 33 kilometers per day while exploring 30 significant landmarks that reflect the cultural, historical, and environmental richness of the region.

Among the participating athletes are notable figures such as Mansour Al Dhaheri, Faisal Alketbi, Khalifa Almazrouei, Ayesha Almemari, Khalfan Alkaabi, Ohoud Al Dhaheri, Jurry Ducay, Becky Gosney, Tarek Ahmed, and Daniel Tesfaye. Their journey will be documented and shared globally in a documentary set to air in March 2025, showcasing the beauty and culture of Abu Dhabi to an international audience.
During the 30-day initiative, the route will feature carefully curated stages that highlight sites of historical and cultural significance, underscoring Abu Dhabi's rich heritage. These landmarks serve not only as symbols of the emirate's cultural and architectural legacy but also convey important historical narratives. Environmental sites, such as the Baynounah Houbara Bird Sanctuary, will emphasize the crucial role of biodiversity preservation and sustainable resource management, aiming to raise awareness about environmental conservation. Additionally, technological sites like the Al Sadeem Observatory will showcase advancements in scientific research and innovation, aligning with the emirate's progressive vision for the future.
The initiative is inclusive, offering opportunities for the public to get involved in the walk. More details will soon be available on Active Abu Dhabi’s social media platforms, encouraging individuals to participate in a 30-day walking challenge by logging 6,000 steps daily using PureHealth’s Pura app.
His Excellency Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are delighted to collaborate with our valued partners to announce the launch of this unique sports and health challenge. It embodies our goal of inspiring the community in the emirate—regardless of age or ability—to promote physical activity and maintain healthy habits.”
He added, “Our purpose is to inspire the Abu Dhabi community to elevate their holistic health and be part of a happier, healthier, and more cohesive society. The WALK 1000 by Active Abu Dhabi will help us effect positive behavioral change across communities while valuing and preserving our rich cultural heritage, highlighting our innovative centers of technological excellence, and raising awareness about the need to protect the environment further.”
To prepare for WALK 1000, a comprehensive calendar of community-focused activities will take place at various locations across Abu Dhabi, allowing people to engage at their own fitness levels. These activities will include special sessions for women and initiatives aimed at encouraging individuals of determination to become active participants.
Mansour Al Dhaheri, Founder of Active Abu Dhabi, remarked, “I am very proud to be helping to create another opportunity for residents across Abu Dhabi to get outside and get active. Regardless of age or ability, the walk and range of community-focused events provide ideal opportunities to make positive lifestyle changes and embark on health and fitness journeys.”
Shaista Asif, Group CEO of PureHealth, shared her excitement about the initiative, saying, “We are thrilled to launch Walk 1000, an Active Abu Dhabi initiative in collaboration with Emirates Foundation. Since the launch of Active Abu Dhabi in March this year, we’ve witnessed the transformative power of community in championing physical activity. By encouraging everyone to take just a few more steps each day, we believe we can foster healthier lifestyles, strengthen our communities, and ultimately improve overall wellbeing.”
The Walk 1000 initiative aims to inspire the community to stay active and prioritize physical fitness, highlighting that just 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week can significantly enhance overall health.
