UAE and Malaysia Collaborate to Protect Endangered Malayan Tigers

In a special event, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, His Royal Highness Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, Regent of Pahang, and His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court, watched an important agreement being signed. The deal was made between the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZF) and Enggang Management Services to create the first-ever tiger reserve in Southeast Asia. The aim of the reserve is to protect the critically endangered Malayan tiger and other rare animals.

This agreement was signed during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, and it includes a US$22 million donation from MBZF to Enggang Management Services over five years. This money will be used to set up the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve, which will be next to Taman Negara National Park. The reserve will cover 1,340 square kilometers and will provide a safe home for Malayan tigers and other endangered animals in Malaysia.

Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke about how important this project is for protecting nature, helping wildlife, and keeping the ecosystem stable. He also mentioned that this project shows the UAE’s commitment to protecting the environment, following the example set by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who worked to protect nature for future generations.

This project is part of worldwide efforts to protect rare species, especially the Malayan tiger, which is listed as critically endangered. There are now fewer than 150 Malayan tigers left in the wild, and tiger numbers have dropped by 97% in the last 100 years due to poaching and loss of their homes.

Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, from the Mohamed bin Zayed Fund for Nature, said, “If tiger numbers keep falling at this speed, experts believe they may be gone soon. But there are examples where quick action has saved animals from extinction. This project will play a big role in protecting the Malayan tiger.”

She added that the project will help increase the area where Malayan tigers live and make sure they can safely reproduce. The plan includes anti-poaching patrols, breeding programs, and fixing up their natural homes. The funding will also help build a research center at the reserve, where scientists will study genetics and work with other countries on research.

The reserve will also have programs for breeding tigers in captivity, reintroducing tigers to the wild, and moving animals to safer areas. A special Rewilding Centre will be named after His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to honor his work in protecting nature and endangered species.

While the Malayan tiger will be the main focus of the reserve, the project will also protect other rare animals, including wild cats, elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and different bird species.

Dato' Sri Muthanna Abdullah, from Enggang Holdings, said, “The support from the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund shows how strong partnerships can help protect nature. Working with the UAE helps us save the Malayan tiger and other rare species. This project will show how global teamwork can work, and we hope it will encourage others to do the same.”

This partnership shows how the UAE plays a big part in the worldwide effort to protect endangered species and keep nature safe for the future.
