The agreement was signed by His Excellency Saleh Mohammed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, and Khuloud Hasan Al Nuwais, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Emirates Foundation.
The goal of ne’ma is to reduce food waste and protect food security in the UAE, which helps with climate change. This agreement will bring big changes in tourism, making it part of the National Food Security Strategy 2051. This strategy aims to cut food waste in the UAE by 50% by 2030.
His Excellency Saleh Mohammed Al Geziry said, “As Abu Dhabi becomes a top destination for tourists, we must focus on sustainable practices. This partnership with ne’ma will guide us in cutting down food waste and spreading awareness about responsible consumption.”
As part of this deal, DCT Abu Dhabi will encourage hotels, restaurants, and other tourist spots to reduce food waste by using smaller portions, changing menus, and using extra food in creative ways. DCT Abu Dhabi will also work on campaigns to teach both tourists and residents how important it is to reduce food waste.
Khuloud Hasan Al Nuwais said, “The partnership with DCT Abu Dhabi is an important step in promoting sustainability in the hospitality and tourism industries. Together, we will help hotels and restaurants adopt better ways to manage food, like using smaller portions, improving menus, and finding new ways to use leftover food. We will also run campaigns to teach everyone about the impact of food waste and the need to be responsible when consuming food.”
DCT Abu Dhabi will also help get rid of extra food in good ways, like donating it to charities or turning it into compost for farming. They will gather information about food waste in the tourism industry to see where they can improve and develop new plans. Additionally, they will support other green initiatives, like reducing plastic use, buying from local food growers, and cutting down on transportation pollution.
DCT Abu Dhabi worked with ne’ma during the first Retrofit Summit to reduce carbon emissions by minimizing food waste and making food-related operations more efficient. They were able to save 89 kg of food from going to the trash and turned 17.8 kg of it into compost for local farms.
At the ICCA Congress, DCT Abu Dhabi also teamed up with ne’ma to use its Zero Food to Landfill plan to make the event more eco-friendly. This helped raise awareness among attendees about food waste and how to reduce it.
This partnership shows DCT Abu Dhabi’s and ne’ma’s shared goal to make tourism in Abu Dhabi more sustainable by reducing food waste.
