Sharjah Ruler opens “Bait Elowal” in Heart of Sharjah

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, opened Bait Elowal, a place that brings together food, history, and culture. The idea of Bait Elowal was created by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi to celebrate Sharjah’s past as a trade and culture center.

The name Bait Elowal means "House of the Traveller." In old Emirati language, “Elowal” was used for someone who traveled far and brought back stories, gifts, and food. This is the idea behind Bait Elowal, where visitors can feel the old trade routes and enjoy food from different places.

His Highness walked around the beautiful two-story house, which is more than 100 years old. It is in the Heart of Sharjah, near the creek, and has been restored to keep its old charm. The thick walls, wooden doors, and a lovely courtyard with a fountain and Moroccan tiles make it a peaceful place.

The ground floor has a restaurant that serves food inspired by the Silk Road – a famous route that connected different countries through trade. The menu includes dishes from Morocco, Persia, India, and Turkey, made with fresh local ingredients.

During the tour, His Highness also visited Soghat Elowal, a small shop that sells handmade crafts from the region. There are clothes with Emirati embroidery, home items from Morocco, and fabric pieces stitched by Palestinian women.

Another place inside Bait Elowal is Al Kutubkhana, which means "House of Books." It is a bookstore with a collection of Arabic and English books for people who love reading.

His Highness then saw Al Atlas, a private dining space for special meals. It has a majlis (traditional sitting area) and offers a special menu where chefs prepare food in front of guests while sharing stories about the dishes.

The last stop on the tour was Al Marmas, a tea terrace that gives a calm place to relax. Inspired by old Emirati tea gatherings, this area has a Moroccan-style design and overlooks the historic Sharjah port. Guests can drink tea with flavors from the Silk Road.

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi shared her thoughts on Bait Elowal, saying, "Every visit here is like a journey through time. We bring together food, stories, and art to remind people of Sharjah’s connection to the world. Bait Elowal is more than just a restaurant—it is a way to keep our traditions alive."

The opening event was attended by Sharjah’s Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and Deputy Ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi. Many Sheikhs, government officials, and cultural leaders were also present.
