Manchester City started strong at their home ground and took the lead in the 19th minute. Erling Haaland, who had never scored against Real Madrid before, finally got his first goal against them. He scored after Josko Gvardiol controlled a pass from Jack Grealish and set him up to shoot past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid tried hard to score and came very close when Vinicius Junior hit the crossbar. City also had their chances, with Manuel Akanji hitting the woodwork with a header. Haaland almost scored another goal early in the second half, but his shot deflected and hit the post.
Madrid finally got their equalizer in the 60th minute. A free kick hit the City players and bounced away, but Dani Ceballos quickly lifted the ball back into the box. Kylian Mbappe swung his leg but missed the ball, and it bounced off his shin into the net, surprising City’s goalkeeper Ederson.
City responded by winning a penalty in the 80th minute when Phil Foden was fouled in the box. Haaland stepped up and scored from the spot, putting City back in the lead.
But Madrid refused to give up. In the 86th minute, former City player Brahim Diaz took advantage of a poor clearance by Ederson and made it 2-2. Then, in stoppage time, Jude Bellingham punished City’s weak defense by scoring the winning goal.
After the match, Bellingham said his team never lost hope, even when they were behind. He also praised City, saying they are a tough team to play against.
City defender John Stones looked very disappointed and said the team needs to do better in finishing games. Madrid now has a big advantage going into the second leg, as they will play at home.
In France, PSG easily won their match against Brest, beating them 3-0. Ousmane Dembele was the star of the game, scoring two goals.
PSG took the lead when Vitinha scored a penalty after the referee checked a handball through VAR. Brest, playing at a different stadium because their home ground did not meet UEFA’s standards, had some good chances. Abdallah Sima hit the post with a strong header, and Achraf Hakimi almost scored an own goal while trying to clear the ball.
Dembele doubled PSG’s lead just before halftime, finishing a beautiful team move with a powerful shot past Brest’s goalkeeper Marco Bizot. In the second half, he scored again with the help of a deflection, bringing his total to 18 goals in 11 games.
PSG’s coach Luis Enrique praised Dembele, saying that he has been in top form and is playing even better in 2025. PSG now looks set to move forward in the tournament.
Juventus also had a good result, winning 2-1 against PSV Eindhoven. Weston McKennie gave Juventus the lead in the first half, but Ivan Perisic equalized for PSV. Later, in the 82nd minute, Samuel Mbangula scored from close range to give Juventus the win.
Borussia Dortmund made a strong statement by beating Sporting Lisbon 3-0. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 60th minute. Pascal Gross added a second goal, and Karim Adeyemi scored a third near the end, securing an important victory for Dortmund.
This was Dortmund’s first win under their new coach Niko Kovac, who replaced Nuri Sahin in January.
With the second leg coming soon, Real Madrid has the upper hand against City, while PSG, Juventus, and Dortmund all look likely to move to the next round. City will have to fight hard if they want to stay in the tournament, while Madrid will aim to take another step toward the Champions League trophy.
