Bayern started strong and controlled the first half at Celtic Park. Just before halftime, Michael Olise scored a great goal to give them the lead. Four minutes into the second half, Kane made it 2-0 with an easy shot at the back post after a corner. This was his seventh goal in the Champions League this season and his 29th in all games.
Celtic tried hard to come back. They thought they had scored in the first minute when Nicolas Kuehn put the ball in the net, but the goal was not allowed because of offside. However, they did not give up. With 11 minutes left, Daizen Maeda scored from a corner to make it 2-1. Celtic pushed for another goal, but Bayern defended well and kept their lead. This was Celtic’s first home loss since December 2023. They now have a tough task to win the second match in Germany next Tuesday. The winner of this match will play against either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid in the next round.
In another match, Benfica won 1-0 away against Monaco. Vangelis Pavlidis scored the only goal early in the second half. The Greek forward has now scored six goals in his last five Champions League games. Monaco’s night became worse when Moatasem Al-Musrati was sent off in the 52nd minute. The Libyan midfielder, who joined from Besiktas, received a second yellow card for making a hand gesture asking the referee to give a yellow card to an opponent. With 10 players left, Monaco could not equalise, and Benfica won. Benfica will try to finish the job at home next week. The winner of this match will face either Liverpool or Barcelona in the next round.
Feyenoord also won 1-0 against AC Milan in Rotterdam. The Dutch club recently sacked coach Brian Priske, but they still managed to get a big win. They scored early in the third minute after a mistake by Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Igor Paixao took a weak shot, but Maignan could not stop it, and the ball bounced off his body and went into the net. Heavy rain made the match difficult, but Feyenoord defended well and stopped Milan from scoring. Captain Quinten Timber praised the team, saying, “This is why we love football. The crowd was amazing, and we gave everything. Now we get ready for next week.” The second match at San Siro will decide who moves to the next round, where either Inter Milan or Arsenal will be waiting.
In Belgium, Club Brugge won 2-1 against Atalanta with a last-minute penalty. The home team scored first in the 15th minute when Ferran Jutgla took advantage of a mistake by Atalanta’s defenders. Before halftime, Mario Pasalic scored a header to make it 1-1. The match looked like it would end in a draw, but in stoppage time, Swedish forward Gustaf Nilsson won a penalty. Atalanta’s Isak Hien accidentally hit Nilsson in the face with his arm, and the referee gave a penalty. Many people thought it was a soft decision, but after checking the video, the referee did not change his mind. Nilsson scored from the penalty spot to give Club Brugge the win. Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere was upset and said, “I saw the replay, and if you ask 100 people, all 100 will say it was not a penalty. It’s strange.”
