Russian forces intensified their assault on Ukraine on Sunday, targeting the country's two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, in a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict. In Kyiv's Obolon suburb, a missile strike from Russian forces caused extensive damage to a 14-storey residential building. Fragments from the missile ignited a fire and severely damaged several balconies, prompting emergency services to treat five female residents for stress-related symptoms. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 10 residents were evacuated from the building for safety reasons. Disturbing images circulated online showed blackened balconies and the aftermath of the missile impact.
The attack in Kyiv came amidst a broader wave of violence across Ukraine. The head of the military administration of the Kyiv region reported that missile fragments also struck areas outside the capital, causing injuries and additional damage, although specific details were not immediately provided.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, another Russian strike hit near a depot, resulting in a deadly outcome. A guided bomb struck close to the depot, sparking a fire that tragically claimed the life of a delivery service driver. Regional Governor Oleh Synehubov disclosed that nine people, including an 8-month-old infant, were injured in the attack. Photos shared online depicted the depot and surrounding vehicles severely damaged by the explosion, highlighting the destructive impact of the ongoing hostilities.
The assault on Kharkiv represents a continuation of Russian military actions against the city, which has remained under constant threat despite never falling into Russian hands during the early stages of the conflict. The recent uptick in violence underscores the persistent danger faced by civilians in urban centers across Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, emphasizing in a statement on Telegram that Russia had deployed more than 800 guided bombs on Ukrainian targets within the past week alone. He reiterated his plea for international support in providing Ukraine with advanced weapons systems to effectively defend against Russian aerial assaults and to target Russian military infrastructure, which he believes will hasten the path to peace.
The escalating violence in Kyiv and Kharkiv marks a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict, heightening concerns over civilian casualties and the humanitarian impact. As the situation continues to unfold, international calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution grow more urgent, amidst fears of further escalation and destabilization in the region.
