Tragedy Strikes: 107 Dead in Stampede at Hathras Religious Event

A tragic stampede at a religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district claimed the lives of at least 107 people, primarily women, on Tuesday. The incident occurred during a 'Satsang' gathering where a religious preacher was addressing followers under a tent in Rati Bhanpur village, Sikandra Rau area.

According to initial reports by the police, the stampede likely ensued due to suffocation and discomfort among attendees, exacerbated by the hot and humid weather conditions during the event. Inspector General Shalabh Mathur of Aligarh Range confirmed the gathering was for a meeting of Bhole Baba devotees, with temporary permission granted for the assembly at the district border of Etah and Hathras.

Among the deceased identified are Ganga Devi (70) from Hathras, Priyanka (20) from Kasganj, Jasoda (70) from Mathura, Saroj Lata (60) from Etah, along with two children, Kavya (4) and Ayush (8) from Shahjahnpur.

Survivors recounted the chaos that unfolded as the event concluded, with attendees rushing to leave. "There was a massive crowd with no clear exit, leading to people falling on each other and the stampede occurring. Outside, motorcycles blocked paths, causing many to faint or lose their lives," described one victim recuperating at a local hospital.

Authorities, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, expressed deep sorrow and directed swift rescue efforts in Hathras and surrounding areas. "The Chief Minister has instructed a thorough investigation into the incident, overseen by ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh," stated the Chief Minister's Office on social media platform X.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the stampede, amidst efforts to provide relief and support to the affected families in this tragic event.
