Air Europa Flight Diverted to Natal, Brazil After Turbulence; 40 Injured
Natal, Brazil: An Air Europa flight, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying 325 passengers, was diverted to Natal Airport in northeast Brazil during the early morning hours following severe turbulence. According to reports from AFP, at least 40 passengers sustained injuries during the incident, prompting an emergency landing.
The health secretariat of Brazil's Rio Grande do Norte state confirmed that injured passengers were transported to hospitals and clinics in Natal for treatment of abrasions and minor traumas. Eleven individuals remain hospitalized for further observation and care.
Videos circulated on social media depicted unsettling scenes inside the aircraft, including loosened ceiling panels and one passenger reportedly becoming trapped in an overhead compartment due to the turbulence.
Mariela Jodal, a passenger on the flight, recounted the harrowing experience of encountering "very strong turbulence," expressing gratitude for the safety provided by wearing a seat belt.
Air Europa released a statement assuring that arrangements were underway to dispatch another plane from Madrid to retrieve the passengers. Meanwhile, the affected Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is undergoing assessment in Natal to evaluate any damage sustained during the turbulence.
This incident follows recent turbulence-related airline emergencies, including a fatal incident involving a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 in May, where extreme turbulence necessitated an emergency landing in Bangkok after causing severe injuries to several passengers and crew.
Turbulence remains a significant concern in aviation safety, with a 2021 study by the US National Transportation Safety Board highlighting its prevalence in airline accidents and the resulting serious injuries, despite typically not causing damage to the aircraft itself.
