French Election Candidates Withdraw to Block Far-Right Surge

French voters are eagerly awaiting the line-up for the second round of parliamentary elections, following a significant number of candidate withdrawals aimed at thwarting the far-right National Rally (RN). Parties have until 18:00 (17:00 BST) on Tuesday to register contenders for Sunday's vote. The outcome will reveal how many left and center candidates have opted out to consolidate the anti-RN vote.

In the first round last Sunday, Marine Le Pen's party, along with its allies, secured approximately 33% of the vote, marking a substantial victory. A broad left-wing alliance came second, with President Emmanuel Macron's centrists in third place. Despite Le Pen's initial strong showing, her chances of securing a majority in the 577-seat National Assembly have been challenged by coordinated opposition tactics.

In over half of the constituencies—around 300—the presence of three candidates from the first round has necessitated strategic withdrawals to enhance the prospects of defeating RN candidates. By midday Tuesday, about 200 candidates from the left and center had already withdrawn from the race. The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) instructed its third-placed candidates to step aside, aiming to consolidate support behind centrist contenders in key constituencies.

Conversely, in some regions, tactical alliances have emerged where pro-Macron candidates have withdrawn to support candidates from opposing political spectrums, all in a bid to prevent RN victories. Jordan Bardella, RN's young president and prime ministerial hopeful, criticized these maneuvers as an "alliance of dishonor" among traditionally rival parties.

While RN leaders have expressed reluctance to form a government without an outright majority, Marine Le Pen suggested that a lower majority, around 270 seats, could suffice to initiate talks with other MPs to form a coalition. She outlined plans to reach out to independent MPs and parts of the conservative Republicans party, which garnered 10% of the vote.

The prospect of a potential RN majority has stirred concerns about a period of "cohabitation" with President Macron, where power dynamics between the executive and legislative branches could become contentious. Le Pen accused Macron of attempting an "administrative coup d'état" by allegedly making strategic appointments in the police and military ahead of the elections, a move she claims could hinder policy implementation aligned with public mandates.

As the French electorate awaits Sunday's decisive vote, the political landscape remains fluid, with strategic withdrawals and alliances shaping the race's final stages.
