Hurricane Beryl, categorized as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm by the US National Hurricane Center, is currently advancing towards the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. It is expected to bring life-threatening winds and flash flooding to the region by Monday.
As of Sunday afternoon, Hurricane Beryl was located approximately 250 miles (400 km) southeast of Barbados, boasting maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph), according to the latest advisory from the NHC.
Forecasters predict that the hurricane's center will pass through the Windward Islands on Monday morning, maintaining its Category 4 intensity. The NHC issued a dire warning, anticipating "potentially catastrophic wind damage" as the eyewall of Hurricane Beryl sweeps through portions of the Windward Islands, with St. Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada facing the highest risk.

This early development of a major hurricane is unusual for the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially spans from June 1 to November 30. Hurricane Beryl has set a new record as the earliest Category 4 hurricane, surpassing Hurricane Dennis in 2005.
Hurricane warnings have been issued for several Caribbean islands including Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Tobago. Additionally, Dominica, Trinidad, parts of the Dominican Republic, and Haiti are under a tropical storm watch. Authorities across the affected areas are bracing for the storm's impact, with Tobago taking precautionary measures such as opening shelters, closing schools for Monday, and postponing elective surgeries in hospitals.
The NHC has also warned of significant rainfall, with Barbados and the Windward Islands expecting 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 cm) of rain throughout Monday, heightening the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable areas. Large and dangerous swells are anticipated along the southern coasts of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
The impending hurricane has also disrupted plans for the Indian cricket team, who are in the region for the World Cup final. The severe weather alert has led to uncertainty regarding their return plans, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to devise contingency plans to mitigate potential travel disruptions.
Meteorologists and experts are predicting an unusually active Atlantic hurricane season in 2024. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecasted "above-normal" hurricane activity, predicting between 17 to 25 named storms throughout the season. This heightened forecast aligns with earlier predictions from various institutions, indicating a potentially more impactful hurricane season than average.
This outlook underscores the need for heightened preparedness and vigilance among coastal communities, as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season poses a heightened risk of multiple storms impacting coastal regions.
