MIPS, a company that has been around for many years in Silicon Valley, said on Tuesday that it is changing its plan. The company used to compete with Arm Holdings, a major tech company, to provide ways of doing computing tasks. Now, MIPS is going to focus on making chips for robots that use artificial intelligence.

MIPS started in the 1980s. A professor from Stanford University, John Hennessey, helped start the company. The goal was to make computing tasks faster and easier. MIPS chips became well-known for processing information quickly, which was helpful for things like networking equipment and self-driving cars.
Over the years, MIPS went through several changes. It even went bankrupt for a while. But it came back in 2021 and decided to focus on a new way of doing computing called RISC-V. This was a different option from Arm's technology, and it led to partnerships with companies like Mobileye, a company that works on self-driving cars.
Now, MIPS is changing its direction again. It will start designing its own chips instead of just selling its technology to other companies. MIPS will focus on three main parts of robotics: chips that help robots sense things, chips that decide what action a robot should take next, and chips that control how a robot moves.
MIPS CEO Sameer Wasson said that the market for robots is growing as new technology is used in things like humanoid robots. Wasson believes it’s better for MIPS to show that they have working chips instead of just making presentations. However, their goal is still to make licensing deals with other companies.
Wasson said that MIPS is not planning to become a full silicon company right away, but they want to make sure other companies trust that they can succeed in this new area. The company will first focus on the car industry and hopes to have their technology used in cars by the end of 2027, with larger-scale use by 2028. They did not name any customers yet, but they are working to make a name for themselves in this growing field.
