Eutelsat's Value Soars as Ukraine Considers Replacing Starlink with OneWeb

Shares of Eutelsat went up by more than 60% on Tuesday, continuing a big increase from the day before when they rose by 68%. This jump happened after news about Ukraine possibly replacing Elon Musk’s Starlink with OneWeb satellites. Since Friday, the value of Eutelsat's shares has nearly tripled. The news comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump had disagreements, raising questions about Starlink’s future in Ukraine.

The rise in shares is due to the possibility of Ukraine changing its satellite contract from Starlink to Eutelsat’s OneWeb. Analysts believe OneWeb is the best choice to replace Starlink. “The shares are rising because of the chance that Ukraine may switch from Starlink to Eutelsat’s OneWeb, which is seen as the best alternative,” said Stephane Beyazian, an analyst.

On Monday, an anonymous White House official said that President Trump would stop all U.S. military aid to Ukraine, which might allow European countries to take a bigger role in supporting Ukraine, including providing satellite services. The European Commission also shared a plan for an 800 billion euro ($841 billion) defense fund for Europe.

Eutelsat said it is committed to strengthening Europe’s satellite services and providing more support for Ukraine. "Eutelsat's promise to offer more satellite capacity shows how important the company is for Europe's defense," said Jan Frederik Slijkerman, an analyst at ING.

The European satellite industry had faced challenges because of strong competition from U.S. companies like SpaceX and its Starlink service. Still, the European Commission's IRIS² satellite program shows Europe’s focus on its future in space. Eutelsat had trouble keeping investor trust because of its rising debt and competition from Starlink. In February, its shares dropped to their lowest point because of concerns over losses from its satellites.

Many investors were betting against Eutelsat’s shares, but the recent price increase has shown that things may be changing for the company. This surge shows that Eutelsat could become an important player in providing satellite services, especially in Ukraine.

With these new developments, Eutelsat is becoming a key company in Europe’s space industry. It is now seen as crucial for providing internet access to Ukraine and helping European defense.
