In a distressing incident, Maldives' prosecutor general, Hussain Shameem, fell victim to a brutal stabbing in the capital city, Male, as reported by local media on Wednesday morning. The attack took place against the backdrop of an intense political confrontation between the Maldivian government and the opposition.
Police reports indicate that the assault, which occurred amid a significant political standoff, did not involve the use of a sharp object. The opposition is currently striving to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu.
Recent parliamentary proceedings witnessed turmoil, with government Members of Parliament causing disruptions during a crucial vote on the approval of the Muizzu government, leading to violence.
Adding complexity to the political landscape, two opposition parties in the Maldives expressed their opposition to the current regime's perceived anti-India pivot. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats criticized the foreign policy shift as 'extremely detrimental' to the country's long-term development.
The opposition contends that distancing the Maldives from any "development partner," especially a longstanding ally like India, will have "detrimental" effects on the nation's long-term growth. They underscored the critical importance of maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean for the well-being of the Maldives.
Both the MDP and The Democrats emphasized the necessity for consecutive governments to have the capability "to work with all development partners for the benefit of the people of the Maldives, as the Maldives has traditionally done."
Meanwhile, the Maldives Sun reported that the attorney general's office has filed a case with the Supreme Court regarding an amendment to the Parliament's orders. This amendment enables opposition lawmakers to pursue impeachment proceedings against the president.
The political landscape in the Maldives has witnessed further complications, as seven lawmakers resigned from the Parliament in November to assume top positions in President Muizzu's administration. This development adds layers of complexity to an already tense and evolving political scenario in the island nation.
