PM Modi Mentions Savarkar's Name in Marseilles During Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Marseille, a city in France, as part of his two-day visit to the country. While there, he remembered Veer Savarkar, an important freedom fighter from India. Savarkar had tried to escape from a British ship in the city when he was being taken to India for trial.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, "I landed in Marseille. This city has special meaning for India’s freedom. It is here that the brave Veer Savarkar tried to escape." He also thanked the people of Marseille and the French activists who fought to keep Savarkar from being handed over to the British.

Savarkar had managed to slip through a small window on the ship, swim to the shore, but was caught by French police. He was later handed back to the British. This caused a lot of trouble between the two countries. Savarkar was sent to the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where he spent many years.

PM Modi’s visit to Marseille also included the opening of a new Consulate General office. He was joined by French President Emmanuel Macron, and together they honored Indian soldiers who died in World War I and II by visiting the Mazargues War Cemetery.

Another part of the visit was to ITER, an international project focused on nuclear fusion, where both leaders discussed scientific cooperation.

Earlier, when PM Modi arrived in Paris, he and President Macron attended a meeting about Artificial Intelligence (AI). PM Modi talked about how AI is changing our lives, but also how it might cause job losses. He encouraged leaders from around the world to work together to make sure AI is used in a way that helps everyone and solves problems like cybersecurity and.
