Japan has asked the United States to be left out of the new steel and aluminum tariffs announced by President Donald Trump. The request was made through Japan’s embassy in the U.S. on Wednesday, according to Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan’s top government spokesperson.

Trump signed an order in March to place a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum starting March 12. The decision has upset many countries, including Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, who are not happy with these new tariffs.
Hayashi said, “We know about the tariffs and have asked the U.S. to exclude Japan from them.” He also mentioned that Japan would carefully study how these tariffs would affect the country and decide what to do next.
Trump’s tariffs aim to protect U.S. steel and aluminum producers from what he believes is unfair competition. In the past, President Joe Biden allowed Japan to send up to 1.25 million tons of steel to the U.S. each year without paying extra fees. But under Trump’s new plan, this special treatment will end.
Under the new tariffs, the steel tax will stay at 25%, and the aluminum tax will go up to 25% from the previous 10%.
