James Tarkowski scored in the 98th minute to help Everton draw 2-2 against Liverpool in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. It was a wild match, and after the final whistle, four red cards were given. Liverpool had a chance to move ahead in the Premier League, but Tarkowski’s late goal stopped them from getting three points. Mohamed Salah had scored earlier to put Liverpool in front, but Everton never gave up and kept fighting until the end.

After the match, things got heated. Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones were both sent off for arguing. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff also received red cards for complaining to the referee. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk looked upset with the result. He said Everton’s celebrations showed how much the draw meant to them, but for Liverpool, it was a missed chance.
Everton will move to a new stadium next season at Bramley Moore Dock. This was their last derby at Goodison Park, and they wanted to make it special. Everton’s coach David Moyes said the game was full of emotions, and scoring at the last minute in the final derby at Goodison felt like a perfect ending.
Liverpool had recently lost to a lower-division team, Plymouth, in the FA Cup, ending their dream of winning four trophies. For this match, Slot brought back key players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. Everton had also lost their FA Cup game against Bournemouth, which slowed their progress, but they started this match full of energy.
Everton scored first in the 11th minute. Jarrad Branthwaite took a quick free-kick, passing the ball to Beto, who ran forward and scored past Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Everton fans cheered loudly as their team took the lead. But Liverpool quickly answered. Alexis Mac Allister made a clever run into the box and headed in Salah’s cross to make it 1-1.
Everton then had bad luck when their creative player, Iliman Ndiaye, got injured and left the field in tears. After that, the game became rough, with many fouls and yellow cards. Everton thought they had scored again when Branthwaite put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled offside.
Liverpool found it hard to break through Everton’s defense, making their coach frustrated. Slot decided to bring in fresh players, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, and Darwin Nunez. These changes helped Liverpool attack better. Jones and Nunez combined well, and when Jones’ shot was blocked, the ball fell to Salah, who calmly scored his 27th goal of the season. Liverpool now looked close to victory.
Everton did not give up. Jordan Pickford made an amazing save to stop Salah from scoring again. That save proved important. In the last moments of the game, Liverpool failed to clear the ball properly, and it fell to Tarkowski, who smashed it into the top corner. Everton fans went crazy, and some even ran onto the field to celebrate. The referee had to stop the game before restarting.
But the drama did not end there. After the match continued, Doucoure celebrated in front of Liverpool fans, making Jones angry. Both players got red cards for their actions. Moments later, Slot and Hulshoff also received red cards for arguing with the referee.
It was a dramatic end to a fierce battle. Liverpool will be unhappy about dropping points, while Everton will remember this game as a proud moment in their final Goodison derby. The Premier League title race is still open, but this night will be remembered for the late goal, strong rivalry, and a stadium that saw one last classic derby.
