Canadian authorities have apprehended and pressed charges against two individuals, including an individual of Indian origin, in relation to the fraudulent sale of counterfeit concert and sports event tickets throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), resulting in financial losses exceeding $100,000 for the victims.
The investigation into the scam commenced in February subsequent to receiving numerous reports of fraudulent activities. Jaspal Thiara, a 37-year-old Toronto resident, and Jordan Cordeiro, a 29-year-old resident of Mississauga, were both taken into custody.
The duo purportedly targeted multiple individuals through personal connections and social media platforms. Victims would provide funds to Thiara and Cordeiro for event tickets but would instead receive fabricated emails and receipts, convincingly designed to appear authentic.
Authorities estimate that victims incurred financial losses surpassing $100,000 due to these incidents of fraud.

Jaspal Thiara was apprehended on Wednesday (March 27) and has been charged with defrauding the public. He was detained for a bail hearing on the same day and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
On the other hand, Cordeiro was arrested on March 19, 2024, and charged with fraud under $5,000. He is slated to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on April 22, 2024.
Investigators suspect that there may be additional individuals who fell prey to this fraudulent scheme.
Canadian law enforcement shared several recommendations to mitigate the risk of falling victim to ticket fraud, including purchasing tickets from reputable sources, verifying ticket authenticity through official channels, and exercising caution when encountering deals that seem too good to be true.
A spokesperson from Peel Police emphasized the importance of purchasing tickets from official vendors or trusted resale platforms. They advised individuals to double-check ticket details by verifying through official websites or contacting event organizers directly, as well as ensuring transactions are conducted through legitimate payment platforms and remaining vigilant against deceptive pop-up advertisements.
