Britain, France and Germany have said they are ready to closely coordinate with the United States and regional partners to counter Iran’s retaliatory military actions, as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German leader Friedrich Merz said they were deeply alarmed by what they described as Iran’s “reckless” strikes against allied targets.
The three leaders said the attacks pose a direct threat to their citizens and military personnel deployed in the region. Their statement focused on ensuring the safety of their nationals and armed forces after reports of drone and missile strikes on allied bases.
The countries said they are prepared to take necessary and proportionate defensive measures. These measures could include actions aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones, especially by targeting launch sites at their source. However, no specific operational details were shared.
The joint response comes amid a series of reported attacks across the region. In Cyprus, Britain’s Defence Ministry confirmed that a suspected drone struck its military facility at RAF Akrotiri. In France, President Macron said a drone hit a hangar at a French naval base on Sunday.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain held an emergency virtual meeting. They strongly condemned Iranian missile attacks that reportedly targeted US military bases, airports, hotels and residential areas within their territories and in Jordan.
The three European nations said they will continue working closely with the United States and regional allies to manage the escalating crisis and protect stability in the Middle East.
