The United Arab Emirates, long known as a safe and peaceful destination, faced a major security shock after Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The attacks came as Iran retaliated against recent military strikes by the United States and Israel. Hundreds of drones and missiles were fired over two days, shaking a country that had largely remained calm despite tensions in the region.
One Killed, Several Injured
According to officials, one person was killed and seven others were injured at the airport in Abu Dhabi. In Dubai, four airport employees were also injured after debris from intercepted missiles caused damage.
The UAE Ministry of Defense said air defense systems intercepted 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and more than 540 drones. Authorities stated that most of the damage was caused by falling debris after successful interceptions.
Fires at Key Landmarks in Dubai
Debris from the intercepted missiles caused fires in several important areas of Dubai:
A fire was reported outside a hotel on Palm Jumeirah.
Flames were seen near the iconic Burj Al Arab.
Smoke rose close to Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
A fire also broke out at Jebel Ali Port, Dubai’s main shipping hub.
Dubai International Airport was damaged and later closed temporarily.
Social media videos showed explosions lighting up the sky as air defense systems intercepted incoming weapons.
UAE Closes Airspace, Shuts Embassy in Tehran
Following the attacks, the UAE closed its airspace and suspended flights. The country also shut its embassy in Tehran and withdrew its diplomats.
In an official statement, the Foreign Ministry described the attacks as an “aggressive and provocative approach” that threatens regional security and the country’s sovereignty.
Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy reassured residents, saying the loud explosions were mainly interception efforts and that air defense systems were working effectively.
Residents and Tourists in Shock
Residents and visitors described the night as frightening and unusual. Many said they were not used to hearing explosions in a country known for its safety.
Tourists were stranded after the airport closure, and hundreds of thousands of travelers across the region faced flight disruptions due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
UAE’s Image of Safety Under Pressure
The UAE, a federation of seven emirates with nearly 11 million residents — about 90% of whom are foreigners — has built its global reputation as a tax-free, luxury destination and one of the safest places in the world.
However, the recent attacks have shaken that image. Real estate, tourism, and international business — key pillars of the country’s economy — may face uncertainty if tensions continue.
For now, officials say the situation is under control, but the attacks have raised serious concerns about security in a region already facing growing conflict.
