Explosions were reported across the Gulf region as Iran launched missiles and drones after the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in joint US-Israeli strikes.
For the second consecutive day, blasts were heard in Dubai (UAE) and Doha (Qatar), creating panic and raising fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
Casualties in UAE
The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that at least three people were killed in the attacks. The victims were Pakistani, Nepalese and Bangladeshi nationals.
Missile interceptions were seen in Dubai’s skies, with white smoke trails visible. Dark smoke also rose from Jebel Ali Port, one of the region’s key shipping hubs.
At Abu Dhabi’s airport, one person was killed and seven others were injured during an incident linked to the attacks. Dubai International Airport was also impacted.
Qatar Faces Missile Barrage
Qatari officials confirmed that Iran launched 65 missiles and 12 drones toward the country. Most were intercepted by air defence systems, but 16 people were reported injured.
Witnesses in Doha described hearing loud explosions and seeing thick black smoke in parts of the city.
Wider Regional Impact
Explosions were also reported in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, though no immediate casualties were confirmed there.
In Oman, two drones struck Duqm Port, injuring one expatriate worker. The attack was condemned by Gulf Cooperation Council members, especially as Oman had been mediating talks between Iran and the United States.
Background of Escalation
The Iranian retaliation came after US and Israeli strikes reportedly killed Khamenei and several top officials. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it targeted US military bases across the Gulf and Israeli military sites.
Israel stated it had struck more than 30 targets inside Iran, including missile systems and military headquarters. According to reports, over 200 people have been killed in Iran since the escalation began.
Former US President Donald Trump warned that the United States would respond with unprecedented force if Iran continues its attacks.
Mourning in Iran
Iran has declared seven days of public holidays and 40 days of national mourning following Khamenei’s death. A three-member interim council has been formed to oversee the leadership transition.
The situation remains tense as Gulf countries stay on high alert amid fears of further escalation.
