Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, is cutting about 10% of its workforce. This decision comes after the company spent years developing rockets and engines, and now, it is aiming to save money and focus on key areas. The company made this announcement during a meeting with CEO Dave Limp, who confirmed the layoffs.
In a message sent to employees, Limp explained that the company’s rapid growth had led to more bureaucracy and less focus. Blue Origin, which has been supported by Bezos’ wealth, hired a lot of people in recent years, but now, it needs to trim its staff to streamline operations. With over 10,000 employees, this means more than 1,000 people could lose their jobs.
The positions being cut include roles in engineering, research and development, and project management. Blue Origin is also reducing the number of managers in its ranks. Limp explained that this shakeup is necessary to help the company move forward and meet its goals, like completing its $10 billion worth of launch contracts.
This news comes just after Blue Origin introduced its New Glenn rocket, which had faced several delays during its development. Bezos started Blue Origin in 2000, and since then, the company has grown rapidly, reaching a peak of about 14,000 employees. The company has ambitious plans for space, including space tourism, a mission to the moon, and even a space station.
Despite its large projects, Blue Origin has faced tough competition from SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk. SpaceX has become a leader in rocket launches, while Blue Origin has been slower to reach milestones. To help Blue Origin improve, Dave Limp, who previously worked at Amazon, was brought in as CEO in 2023 to lead the company out of its slow development phase.
Looking ahead, Blue Origin plans to send an uncrewed vehicle to the moon in 2025 and increase the number of launches for its New Glenn and New Shepard rockets. The company is focusing on the future and working to grow its presence in space exploration.
