The UAE Public Prosecution has announced stringent penalties for individuals found guilty of insulting others or making defamatory statements through digital platforms. According to a recent statement released on the X platform, anyone convicted of using information networks, technology, or systems to insult someone or falsely attribute actions that could lead to punishment or contempt will face severe legal repercussions.
Under the new guidelines, offenders can be fined between Dhs250,000 and Dhs500,000 and may also face imprisonment. The decision on whether to impose a fine, imprisonment, or both will depend on the specific circumstances of the case.
The Public Prosecution emphasized that if the defamatory act or insult is directed at a public official or someone entrusted with a public service while they are performing their duties, this will be considered an aggravating factor. This means that the penalties for such offenses could be more severe, reflecting the increased seriousness of the crime when committed against individuals in positions of authority.
This move underscores the UAE's commitment to maintaining respect and integrity within digital communications, reinforcing the legal framework governing online behavior and ensuring that those who misuse digital platforms to harm others face significant consequences.
