Russian Strike on Ukrainian Town Kills 7, Zelensky Pleads for More Weapons

Kyiv: A Russian missile strike on the southern Ukrainian town of Vilniansk has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, according to Ukrainian officials. This attack follows a Ukrainian drone strike that killed five individuals in a Russian border village, marking a particularly deadly day in the ongoing conflict that has spanned over two years.

Among the victims in Vilniansk were two children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the death toll may rise further. "Seven people, including two children, have been killed by a Russian missile strike in the Zaporizhzhia region," Zelensky stated on social media. He also called for expedited weapons deliveries from Western allies, stressing that "any delay in decisions in this war means the loss of human lives."

Ukraine's Internal Minister, Igor Klimenko, reported that 18 people, including four children, were wounded in Vilniansk. He shared images showing a burnt-out low-rise building and blackened cars. Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia region, mentioned that a "critical infrastructure facility, a shop, and residential buildings were damaged" in the strike. Vilniansk is located 29 kilometers (18 miles) northeast of the city of Zaporizhzhia, which remains under Ukrainian control.

The Russian strike on Vilniansk came just hours after Moscow reported that a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian border village of Gorodishche killed five people, including two children. The Kursk region's governor, Alexei Smirnov, confirmed the fatalities and added that two other family members were in serious condition. The drone was a "copter"-style device, capable of carrying grenades or other explosives to drop over targets. Both sides have extensively used drones, including larger self-detonating crafts, throughout the conflict since it began in February 2022.

Ukraine has increased its attacks on Russian territory this year, targeting energy sites that it claims fuel Russia's military and towns and villages just across the border. The fighting in Ukraine has intensified, with Russian forces launching offensives from multiple directions, taking advantage of Kyiv's current military challenges.

In addition to the Vilniansk attack, Ukrainian officials reported that four people were killed in eastern frontline villages in the Donetsk region. Vadym Filashkin, the head of the Donetsk region, reported on social media that three people were killed in the village of Zarichne. The office of Ukraine's General Prosecutor later confirmed another fatality in the eastern village of New York, a resident who "sustained fatal injuries." New York has faced intense attacks since mid-June as Russian forces push towards the city of Toretsk, further north.

In the central city of Dnipro, police identified a woman killed in an attack a day earlier, which also wounded 13 people. Ukraine's National Police stated that the victim was a 76-year-old resident of a destroyed apartment block, and the number of wounded included "an infant and a pregnant woman."

These incidents underscore the ongoing brutality and complexity of the conflict, with significant civilian casualties and continued calls for international support and intervention.
