A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed.
The quake occurred offshore and was centered near the western coast of the island. Residents in North Sumatra reported feeling the tremors, although the shaking lasted only a few seconds.
Authorities have stated that there are no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. No tsunami warning has been issued, and officials say there is currently no risk to coastal areas.
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise people to stay alert in case of aftershocks. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) is assessing the area for any possible impacts.
This earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events in Indonesia, a country located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
