Kylian Mbappe in action
In Ligue 1 action on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain narrowly defeated an energetic Strasbourg 2-1. Despite Kylian Mbappe's penalty being expertly saved, he later capitalized on a goal-scoring opportunity gifted by the Strasbourg goalkeeper's clearance. PSG now boasts 47 points from 20 games, while Nice and Brest, in second and third place respectively, are set to face off on Sunday with 38 and 35 points. PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the opponent's high press, stating, "We had a good match against an opponent who had a good dynamic and nothing to lose."
Strasbourg, led by Patrick Vieira, displayed a strong start, with Gianluigi Donnarumma making a crucial early save. Strasbourg's debutant goalkeeper, Alaa Bellaarouch, denied Mbappe's penalty attempt. However, Mbappe later scored his 20th league goal after a panicked clearance. In the second half, Mbappe turned provider, setting up Marco Asensio for a clinical finish. Strasbourg's youthful side responded, with Dilane Bakwa's well-executed flick reducing the deficit. Despite creating problems for PSG, Strasbourg's missed chances left Vieira frustrated, resulting in a booking for the former France captain.
The match saw no repeat of PSG's recent struggles, as they held on to their lead despite Strasbourg's attempts to rally. The home fans at the Stade de la Meinau cheered on their team, but Strasbourg ultimately sits mid-table with 25 points from 20 games, while PSG emerged victorious in a match they eventually dominated.
