Paris Olympics: Vinesh Phogat Faces USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in Final Match

Vinesh Phogat has advanced to the gold medal match in the women’s 50kg wrestling category at the Paris Olympics 2024, where she will face Sarah Hildebrandt from the USA. This will be their third encounter, following two previous bouts in 2019.

Vinesh's journey to the final has been remarkable. After setbacks at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she has made a powerful statement this year. Her campaign gained significant attention with a stunning victory over Japan’s Yui Susaki in the opening round. Susaki, a renowned wrestler with an unbeaten record in over 90 international matches and the Tokyo 2020 50kg champion, was defeated by Vinesh in a dramatic last-minute win.

Following that, Vinesh continued her impressive form by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5. In the semi-final, she secured a decisive 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylys Gusman.

Her opponent in the final, Sarah Hildebrandt, brings a wealth of experience to the match. At 30 years old, Hildebrandt has had a distinguished career, transitioning through various weight classes from 55kg to 50kg. She won the bronze medal in the 50kg category at the Tokyo Games, where Vinesh was competing in the 53kg category at the time. Hildebrandt's bronze medal win included a dominant 12-1 victory over Oksana Livach.

Hildebrandt's accolades include seven Pan American titles across three weight classes and four World Championship medals—two silvers and two bronzes. Her path to the Paris final included victories over China’s Feng Ziqi and Mongolia’s Dolgorjavyn Otgonjargal, with the latter being a 5-0 win in the semi-finals.

In their previous encounters, Vinesh and Hildebrandt first faced off at the 2019 Dan Kolov and Nicola Petrov event in Bulgaria, where Vinesh won by pinfall, with Hildebrandt taking bronze and Vinesh silver. Later that year, at the 2019 World Championships in Kazakhstan, Vinesh defeated Hildebrandt in the Repechage round on her way to winning the 53kg bronze medal. 

As Vinesh prepares for the final match, the rematch against Hildebrandt promises to be a thrilling conclusion to her Olympic campaign.
