70 Killed in Nigeria Following Fatal Petrol Tanker Explosion

A tragic accident occurred in central Nigeria on Saturday when a tanker carrying petrol burst into flames killing at least 70 people. The explosion occurred immediately after the tanker overturned and many victims were trying to scoop up spilled fuel. The tanker was transporting 60,000 litres of gasoline and was involved in a crash around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) at the Dikko junction. The Dikko junction connects the capital city of Abuja to the northern city of Kaduna.

The head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, Kumar Tsukwam, confirmed that the number of deaths stood at 70. Tsukwam added that most of the victims were burned beyond recognition, and teams were working at the scene to clear the area.

An explosion strikes a nation battling with the increasingly costly gasoline, following a significant surge in price for fuel- five times it was in 18 months; hence, intensifying the current economic crisis that is being suffered in the nation. This rise has led numerous individuals to resort to desperate dangers such as getting out to scoop up spilled fuel following accidents.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago reacted to the incident, describing it as "worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate." He also stated that some of the survivors suffered burns, though the number of people who were burnt was not stated.

This is another sad blast following a similar one that happened in October in Jigawa State where more than 170 people were killed by an explosion of a similar kind. The incidences raise serious concern on the perils posed by individuals seeking fuel from accident sites as the country continues to pay the skyrocketing price for fuel.
