Panvel Water Woes Used as Dehrang Dam Overflow

Residents of Panvel in Mumbai breathed a collective sigh of relief as persistent rains recently replenished the Dehrang Dam, prompting the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) to withdraw water cuts that had been causing significant inconvenience across the city. The timely replenishment of the dam's water levels by the recent downpour has enabled the PMC to resume regular supply operations.

The PMC, responsible for managing Panvel's water supply, faces a daily demand of 32 million litres, which had been challenging to meet due to dwindling reserves at the Dehrang Dam. Compounded by irregular supply from external sources, the situation had forced the PMC to implement a once-a-week water cut, leaving residents grappling with erratic water availability and expressing persistent concerns.

The Dehrang Dam, a vital water source constructed in 1964 and located approximately 15 kilometres from Panvel, spans an area of 277 acres, with 125 acres submerged under water. Over the years, sedimentation from the nearby Matheran hills had significantly reduced its storage capacity, necessitating urgent desilting measures to restore its efficiency in water retention.
