NYU Abu Dhabi researchers create simulated moon dust for space studies

Scientists at NYU Abu Dhabi have made a big step by creating fake moon dust. This special soil, called the Emirates Lunar Simulant, will help them get ready for future space trips. It will be used for the Emirates Lunar Mission and the UAE’s plans to send astronauts to the Moon.

Since it is not possible to bring lots of real moon soil to Earth, scientists make fake soil that is very similar. The NYU team used special rocks found in the UAE, called anorthosite rocks, to make this dust. These rocks have the same minerals and chemicals as real moon soil, making them perfect for testing.

The team, led by scientist Vigneshwaran Krishnamoorthi and some students, is using the fake moon dust to test tools for space missions. They are checking how well landing systems work, testing machines that will explore the Moon’s surface, and trying equipment for building and mining.

The Space Exploration Lab at NYU Abu Dhabi, which is part of the Centre for Astrophysics and Space Science, is working hard to support space studies. This new fake moon dust will help them make better plans and tools for future space missions.
