According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, during the encounter, Nyah Mway fled on foot, prompting a pursuit by officers. The situation escalated when officers observed what appeared to be a handgun in the boy's possession. One officer engaged in a ground struggle with Nyah Mway, during which another officer discharged a single shot that struck the teenager in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid at the scene, Nyah Mway succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital.

Following community outcry and demands for transparency, police released several minutes of body camera footage on Saturday night. The footage purportedly shows Nyah Mway fleeing while allegedly pointing the replica weapon, prompting officers to shout warnings of a gun to each other. It was later determined that the handgun replica resembled a Glock 17 but could only fire pellets or BBs, not bullets.
