In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Sheikh Mohammed praised Professor Yaghi for his outstanding work in the field of reticular chemistry. He highlighted the significant impact of his research in solving global problems like energy, water, and environmental challenges.
“Professor Omar Yaghi, who is from Jordan, has made groundbreaking contributions to the field of reticular chemistry. His work has led to new solutions for important issues the world is facing. He has published more than 300 research papers, which have been cited over 250,000 times. We celebrate this achievement and are proud that our region is home to brilliant minds that contribute greatly to human knowledge,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, the UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Great Arab Minds Higher Committee, personally informed Professor Yaghi about his win through a video call. Al Gergawi explained that the award reflects Sheikh Mohammed's vision to celebrate and support outstanding Arab talent in natural sciences, as part of a broader goal to promote innovation and excellence across the Arab world.
"Your work in chemistry, a field where our region once led the world, and your development of new materials that improve human lives, makes us all proud. You are a shining example of Arab scientific creativity, advancing knowledge and inspiring the next generation of Arab scientists,” Al Gergawi told Professor Yaghi.
Al Gergawi also encouraged students and researchers in the Arab world to explore scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, and biology, to lead future innovations and help drive progress in the basic sciences that are essential to the development of civilizations.
Professor Yaghi’s pioneering work in reticular chemistry, a revolutionary field, focuses on creating frameworks by connecting molecular building blocks using strong chemical bonds. His research has led to the development of advanced materials like Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs).
These materials have many important applications, including capturing carbon, producing clean energy, harvesting water, and improving chemical reactions. Professor Yaghi’s contributions have greatly changed material science and offer sustainable solutions to create a better future.
