In January, a U.S. official and a senior diplomat shared that Qatar plans to help Syria by paying for an increase in public worker wages. This is part of Syria's new government's promise to raise salaries. Qatar, which has supported those who fought against Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad, asked the U.S. to let them send money to Syria even though there are rules stopping this.

Syria’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was named president for a short time on Wednesday. He also has the job of creating a temporary government council.
Earlier in January, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, visited Damascus, the capital of Syria. During a press meeting on Thursday, he said Qatar would send Syria 200 megawatts of electricity. They plan to send more in the future.
In December, Qatar said it would reopen its embassy in Damascus after 13 years. This happened just after Assad lost power. Qatar closed its embassy in 2011 because of Assad’s violence against people protesting peacefully, which led to a long war in Syria.
