Indian-American businessman Rishi Shah, former billionaire co-founder of Outcome Health, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison by a US court for his role in a ₹8,300 crore ($1 billion) fraud scheme. This scandal rocked high-profile investors like Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Google parent Alphabet Inc., and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker's venture capital firm.
Outcome Health, originally known as Context Media Health, was founded by Mr. Shah and co-founder Shradha Agrawal in 2006. The company aimed to revolutionize medical advertising by placing televisions in doctors' offices to stream targeted health ads to patients.
Despite its promising start, Outcome Health's success was built on deception. Prosecutors revealed that Mr. Shah, along with Agrawal and CFO Brad Purdy, orchestrated a massive fraud by overstating the company's financial health and ad inventory capabilities. They misled investors and clients like Novo Nordisk A/S with fabricated data, portraying exaggerated revenue growth to attract further investments.
Mr. Shah's extravagant lifestyle, funded by inflated ad sales and investor financing, included luxury travel and multi-million dollar purchases. By 2016, his net worth soared to over $4 billion, a figure inflated through fraudulent accounting practices.
The company's facade began to crumble in 2017 when a Wall Street Journal expose revealed the fraudulent activities. Subsequently, investors, including Goldman Sachs and Alphabet, filed lawsuits accusing Outcome Health of fraud, highlighting a $487.5 million fundraising round that left investors with vastly overvalued stakes.
In April 2023, Mr. Shah, Agrawal, and Purdy were convicted on multiple counts of fraud and money laundering. Mr. Shah received a seven and a half-year prison sentence, while Agrawal was sentenced to three years in a halfway house, and Purdy received two years and three months in prison. The US Securities and Exchange Commission also pursued civil action against them and other former Outcome Health executives.
At sentencing, Mr. Shah expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging his failure to oversee Outcome Health's expansion responsibly and create a corporate culture that condoned deceptive practices. His admission of guilt marked the culmination of one of the largest corporate fraud cases in recent memory.
