Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Police believe Hackman, who was 95 years old, may have died nine days before he was found. His pacemaker last sent a signal on February 17. The cause of death for both Hackman and his 64-year-old wife has not been decided yet.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said there was no crime involved. Tests showed that carbon monoxide was not the cause of death. The police do not know who died first. The couple was found in different rooms—Hackman was in the kitchen, and Arakawa was in a bathroom. Pills were scattered on the counter near Arakawa. Their pet dog was also found in the bathroom. The police said both of them fell suddenly and had no injuries.
The caretaker of their gated community became worried when he did not see them for days. He looked through a window and saw something unusual. He then called emergency services. When police arrived, they found a door at the back of the house slightly open. Two of the couple’s dogs were using it to go in and out of the house.
The police collected some important things from the house, including medicine for the heart and thyroid, a 2025 calendar, two mobile phones, and medical records. A test will be done on the pills found in the bathroom and other medicines in the house. The results could take three months or more.
Hackman was a well-known actor with a deep voice. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps before starting his acting career in the 1960s. His big break came in the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, where he played the role of Buck Barrow. He won his first Oscar in 1972 for playing a police officer in The French Connection. In 1993, he won another Oscar for Unforgiven.
Hackman and Arakawa moved to Santa Fe in the 1980s. They were involved in the city’s art and food community. In recent years, they stayed away from public life as Hackman’s health became weak. Sheriff Mendoza said the couple lived a quiet and private life.
