Meet Shaheer Niazi The Boy Who Broke Isaac Newton's Record at age 16

Exclusive Interview by: Arslan Syed

In a remote region of Balochistan, a young scientist, Shaheer Niazi, is making waves in space research. Shaheer Niazi, a prodigious young boy from Pakistan, achieved the unthinkable by breaking Isaac Newton's record at the tender age of 16 with his revolutionary research on electric honeycomb. Now recognized globally, he works as a research scientist at the Taqwa Space Observatory on the outskirts of Bela City, Kerner, Lasbela Division, Balochistan. His passion lies in uncovering astronomy's secrets, and he aims to bring home a Nobel Prize. Featured in the Open Royal Science Journal (2017) and Forbes' 30 Under 30 (2018), Shaheer plans to advance his research further.

After completing his graduation in physics from the Institute of Space Technology in Islamabad, defying conventional wisdom, Shaheer chose to stay in Pakistan and pursue a career in astronomy— a bold move for someone of his age in a world where many opt to settle abroad. Shaheer's primary work involves researching the galaxy, planets, and stars and capturing images of celestial bodies.

The Taqwa Space Observatory

The Taqwa Space Observatory is equipped with three powerful telescopes, making it the only institution in Pakistan with such advanced technology.

The Phenomenon of Electric Honeycomb

When asked about the significance of his research, Shaheer explained, "Electric honeycomb is a scientific phenomenon where a pattern emerges on the surface of oil when high-voltage electricity is applied. My research has uncovered new aspects of this phenomenon, and I have introduced thermal imaging to the field of electric honeycomb research."

Physics Research Hubs in Pakistan: Igniting Young Minds

"It is often said that young people in Pakistan lack resources and institutions to conduct world-class research, forcing them to leave the country in disappointment." Shaheer Niazi disagrees, saying, "Yes, such institutions do exist in Pakistan, where university students are provided opportunities to conduct research under the supervision of professors. For instance, the National Center for Physics in Islamabad is conducting high-quality research in particle physics, and GC University is working on nuclear physics. Both institutions have particle accelerators. Despite this, the lack of publicity for these institutions creates difficulties for students to benefit from their resources."

Shaheer Niazi is a shining example of Pakistan's talent, and it is essential to prevent brain drain at the national level. When asked about his future plans, Shaheer said, "I will continue my research wherever better opportunities arise, whether in Pakistan or abroad. My identity will always remain Pakistani."

What's Next for Science in Pakistan?

Although Pakistan is part of the developing world, its soil has produced brilliant minds like Dr. Abdus Salam (Nobel laureate) and Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan (nuclear scientist) in the past. What is the future of science in Pakistan, and are there resources available for research in scientific subjects?

According to young scientist Shaheer Niazi, "Pakistan has resources, but science is not given the first priority, as it is linked to our national priorities. For other scientific fields, it depends on universities and how many grants the Higher Education Commission provides. However, this depends on the nature of the project and whether resources are available."

In Pakistan, the decline of institutions is accelerating. Where does Pakistan stand in the field of science, and is it not time to establish new institutions for modern scientific research to benefit from progress in the field?

Shaheer Niazi says, "New research institutions are being established, but the process is slow. SPARCO has also started focusing on space research. Recently, a center for environmental science research was established in Gilgit-Baltistan. Currently, there is no trend of research in astronomy in Pakistan, but students are interested in astronomy. However, there is a lack of new institutions, and Pakistan needs to set its priorities to establish new institutions."

Will Pakistan Produce Another Nobel Laureate?

Dr. Abdus Salam made history in 1979 by becoming Pakistan's first Nobel laureate. Now, the nation's eyes are on Shaheer Niazi, a young scientist with a promising future. We asked Shaheer if he can bring home another Nobel Prize.

A Confident Response

Shaheer's response exuded confidence. "The answer to this question depends on my ability to continue my research in this field and produce groundbreaking work. However, this requires collaboration with an institution, as the Nobel Prize is awarded based on joint efforts. I believe that with the support of the Pakistani people's prayers, I can make it happen, God willing!"

Shaheer's words offer a glimmer of hope for a nation eager to produce another Nobel laureate. As we continue to follow his journey, one thing is certain—Shaheer Niazi is a name to watch in the world of science.
