The World Bank’s Board of Directors has approved a $100 million project to enhance higher education in Tunisia. This initiative aims to help students gain the skills needed for jobs, improve university education, and strengthen how institutions are managed. It will focus on making education more relevant to the job market, ensuring students graduate with the knowledge employers are looking for.

Tunisia’s Progress and Challenges

Tunisia has made great efforts to improve higher education and connect it to industries that need skilled workers. Reforms have focused on updating courses, expanding studies in high-demand fields, and helping universities work more closely with businesses.

However, some big challenges remain. Many young people struggle to find jobs, and the time it takes for graduates to enter the workforce is still long. The private sector does not create enough jobs for highly educated workers, making it even harder. One major problem is that students' skills do not always match what employers need. Many graduates also lack hands-on work experience, making it difficult for them to get hired.

Need for Future-Ready Skills

As the world changes, Tunisia needs to prepare students for new trends like digital technology and climate change. This means investing in digital skills, green jobs, and healthcare education. These fields are becoming more important in today’s economy, and having the right skills will help graduates succeed in the future.

How the Project Will Help

The Strengthening Tertiary Education for Employability, Innovation, and Resilience (STEEIR) project is designed to tackle these problems in two key ways:

  1. Better Degree Programs – The project will update courses, modernize campuses, and create stronger partnerships between universities and employers. This will make students more prepared for the job market.

  2. Stronger University System – The project will also work on improving university management, upgrading digital tools, and ensuring better quality education. These changes will make the education system more efficient and effective.

A Step Toward a Stronger Future

By focusing on education quality, job skills, and better management, the STEEIR project aims to create a brighter future for Tunisian students. With these improvements, graduates will have better chances of finding good jobs, and Tunisia’s economy will benefit from a stronger, more skilled workforce.
