The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has officially announced the launch details of its first-ever Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, called Etihad-SAT. This advanced satellite has been developed in partnership with South Korea’s Satrec Initiative. According to MBRSC, Etihad-SAT is set to be launched in the first week of March 2025. It will be sent into space aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA.
A Big Step for UAE’s Space Program
Etihad-SAT is an important achievement for MBRSC’s Satellite Development Programme because it is the first satellite in the UAE to have SAR imaging technology. This technology will allow scientists and researchers to capture clear and detailed images of Earth, no matter the weather or time of day. This will improve the country’s Earth observation capabilities and also help strengthen the UAE’s position in satellite technology and space exploration.

Expanding UAE’s Space Mission
H.E. Hamad Obaid AlMansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, expressed his excitement about this launch, stating, “The launch of Etihad-SAT is proof of the UAE’s dedication to strengthening its space sector. By using the latest satellite technology, we are expanding our ability to provide important solutions that will help build a knowledge-based and innovative economy. We are committed to continuing our space projects to solve global challenges, promote sustainability, and drive technological advancements.”
H.E. Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, added, “Etihad-SAT is the result of a knowledge-sharing program with Satrec Initiative. This project has allowed us to gain valuable experience in SAR satellite development. With this technology, the satellite will provide support to many important sectors in the UAE. This mission shows our dedication to building innovative space solutions that contribute to sustainable development, support the economy, and position the UAE as a leader in the global space industry.”
Development of Etihad-SAT
The development of Etihad-SAT began two years ago as part of a collaboration between MBRSC and South Korea’s Satrec Initiative. The initial stage of the project involved defining the satellite’s features and technical requirements. After this, engineers moved on to the design and testing phase to make sure the satellite met the highest industry standards.
In the later stages, MBRSC engineers worked closely with experts from Satrec Initiative to finalize the design and manufacturing of the satellite. This partnership reflects the UAE’s commitment to working with global experts in space technology to further its ambitions in space exploration.
What Makes Etihad-SAT Special?
Etihad-SAT is equipped with state-of-the-art SAR technology, which allows it to capture high-resolution images of Earth, regardless of weather conditions, daylight, or environmental interference. Unlike traditional cameras that rely on sunlight, SAR technology uses radio waves to scan the Earth's surface. This makes it possible to collect data even through clouds, rain, or darkness.
The satellite will have three main imaging modes:
Spot Mode: Provides highly detailed images of small areas.
Scan Mode: Covers large regions for wide-area observation.
Strip Mode: Captures long, continuous areas for extended monitoring.
These features make Etihad-SAT a useful tool for various industries, including:
Detecting and managing oil spills.
Tracking natural disasters like floods and storms.
Supporting maritime navigation and security.
Improving agricultural techniques with smart monitoring.
Conducting environmental studies and monitoring climate changes.
How SAR Technology Works
SAR technology is one of the most advanced methods used for Earth observation. Unlike optical cameras that require daylight to take images, SAR technology works by sending radar signals from the satellite to Earth. These signals bounce off the surface and return to the satellite, where data is collected and processed into highly detailed images. This allows for accurate and continuous monitoring of land, water, and urban areas, even in challenging weather conditions.
Managing the Satellite
Once Etihad-SAT is launched and deployed in space, it will become part of the UAE’s growing satellite fleet. MBRSC will be responsible for operating and managing the satellite, ensuring that the data collected is processed efficiently with artificial intelligence. This will help in quick decision-making and improve various applications, from environmental monitoring to national security.
A Bright Future Ahead
The launch of Etihad-SAT marks another proud achievement for the UAE’s space program. With this satellite, MBRSC is taking a major step toward strengthening its capabilities in space technology. The knowledge gained from this project will help future space missions and ensure that the UAE continues to play an important role in global space exploration.
