Chaos erupted aboard an EasyJet flight bound for London Gatwick when a suspected bag of vapes exploded, forcing an emergency landing and evacuation. The flight, carrying 236 passengers, had just taken off from Heraklion, Greece, when the incident unfolded. As passengers settled in for the journey, reports of popping noises and thick smoke filled the aircraft, sending panic through the cabin.

Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying scene. One passenger described seeing "a very large red flash and flame, followed by thick black smoke," causing widespread alarm. In the midst of the chaos, passengers reportedly began shouting "bomb" and rushing to exit the plane, adding to the panic. Another witness detailed how "fire and acrid smoke billowed from the bag, with popping and exploding noises" as smoke quickly enveloped the cabin.

Further accounts suggest the source of the explosion may have been a British woman’s bag, which reportedly contained a vape and a power bank. Passengers claimed the woman was seen waving her bag around as it began emitting smoke, sparking confusion and fear among those onboard.

Despite the frightening scene, no serious injuries were reported. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the plane was evacuated as it came to a stop on the runway. One passenger sustained a minor friction burn while sliding down the emergency chute, but all others escaped unharmed.

Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a combination of lithium-ion batteries and e-cigarettes inside the passenger's cabin bag, a reminder of the dangers posed by electronic devices on flights. Following a thorough inspection, the aircraft was declared safe, allowing passengers to retrieve their belongings before continuing their journey on a replacement flight.

In a statement, EasyJet confirmed the incident, saying: "EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY8216 from Heraklion to London Gatwick was evacuated prior to departure due to a fire in a passenger’s cabin bag. Fire services attended the aircraft, and the cabin crew evacuated the aircraft in line with procedures. Customers are being cared for in the terminal, and a replacement aircraft and crew have been arranged to fly customers home later today. Safety is our highest priority."

The incident underscores the potential risks associated with carrying lithium-ion batteries and other electronic devices in personal luggage, raising concerns about the need for stricter regulations regarding such items on commercial flights. Fortunately, the crew's quick response and the effective handling of the situation prevented a more serious outcome.
