Millions across Asia celebrate the Year of the Snake with joy

Millions of people across Asia are celebrating the Lunar New Year. In China, people enjoy eight public holidays for the 2025 Spring Festival. This is a time to be with family, eat special meals, watch performances, and light firecrackers and fireworks.

Train stations and airports in China are crowded as millions travel to be with their families. This yearly event is expected to have more travelers than ever before. Many places in East and Southeast Asia, including South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand, are decorated with red banners. These red decorations are believed to keep away bad luck.

In Taiwan, people visited temples on Wednesday morning to offer fruits, sweets, crackers, and nuts as a sign of respect. Some people also took part in a fun tradition. They raced to be the first to light incense, hoping for good luck in the new year. One person, Kao Meng-shun, won the race at Fusing Temple in Yunlin County. He said, “I didn’t want to regret it when I’m older, so I decided to go for it. While I’m young and full of energy, it’s the perfect time to take action.”

In China, about nine billion people are expected to travel during the 40-day period of the Lunar New Year holidays. This is a record number of trips, including by train and plane. Many people are traveling back home to see their families.

In South Korea, heavy snow caused delays to trains, planes, and buses as people traveled to visit family in the countryside. Passengers at Seoul’s main train station were seen carrying colorful gifts and bags as they left the capital.

The Lunar New Year is an important time for families to come together. People celebrate with traditions that have been passed down through generations. This year, millions are celebrating the Year of the Snake.
