The forum is organized by the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) and will take place from January 28 to 30, 2025, at Conrad Abu Dhabi, Etihad Towers. More than 50 well-known speakers from around the world, including experts, government officials, and researchers, are attending to discuss how to solve water problems and improve weather.
In a speech given by Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that the UAE believes scientific research is important for solving today's problems and preparing for future challenges. He added that while the country focuses on space, artificial intelligence, and clean energy, they also invest in research to ensure enough water for everyone.
His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan talked about how water security is a top priority for the UAE. He said, "Water is not just a local problem, but a global one. It needs everyone to work together to solve it." He also praised the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his help in moving forward in this area.
Sheikh Theyab also mentioned that the UAE wants to lead the world in finding new ways to protect and manage water. He pointed out that the country is already investing in new technologies and supporting research projects to help with water shortages.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of UAEREP, which started in 2015 to support research in weather changes and rain, His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan honored people and organizations that helped with the program over the years.
The honorees included Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court, Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, Advisor to the UAE President, and Abdulla Al Mangoosh, who helped start the rain enhancement work in the UAE in the 1990s. Several organizations, like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defense, and the Emirates News Agency, were also recognized.
Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous thanked the UAE leaders for their support, saying, "Thanks to their support, we have made a lot of progress in creating new ways to help with water shortages."
The UAE’s efforts to push forward rain enhancement research have made it a key player in the global conversation about water security. Dr. Al Mandous said, "Through events like IREF, we share our ideas and technologies with the world to help everyone manage water better."
The UAE is also preparing to co-host the UN Water Conference with Senegal in 2026, showing its strong commitment to solving water problems. Dr. Al Mandous finished by saying, "The UAE will keep leading in rain enhancement research to build a sustainable future for all."
Alya Al Mazrouei, Director of UAEREP, thanked His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support. She said the program has achieved a lot, including creating new rain enhancement technologies and securing patents. This has helped the UAE become a leader in this important field.
The 7th IREF also marks the 10th year of UAEREP, which has spent AED 82.6 million on 11 successful research projects. These have resulted in eight patents, with three more waiting for approval. There are also three new research projects in progress.
The forum is focusing on using technology like artificial intelligence to help improve weather and water management. It is a great opportunity for countries and experts to share ideas and work together to find solutions to water problems. The UAE continues to lead the way in creating new ways to manage water and help countries around the world.
