Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza inaugurated the Dubai Open for Tennis Academies (DOTA) Tournament, a collaborative effort between the Dubai Sports Council, UAE Tennis Federation, and Sania Mirza Tennis Academy. With over 200 tennis talents from 40 sports academies participating, the tournament aims to discover and nurture exceptional talent in the sport across seven different categories. The event, running until February 4, 2024, kicked off with adult and seniors' contests, followed by junior categories from January 5 to February 4, 2024.
The opening ceremony, attended by sports dignitaries, included the planting of a DOTA tree to support environmental sustainability. Sania Mirza, expressing her honor as the primary sponsor, emphasized the tournament's alignment with Dubai Sports Council's strategic goals and its contribution to Dubai's 2033 plan for talent development. She envisaged the tournament creating champions for the UAE and highlighted her hands-on role in selecting promising national talents. These talents will be integrated into her Emirati Talent Development Program, receiving guidance and support for international success.
Mirza's collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council and UAE Tennis Federation is expected to significantly contribute to nurturing and discovering new tennis talent. The DOTA tournament, sponsored by leading government and private entities, aims to become a prominent regional event, celebrating skill, sportsmanship, and community spirit. Sania Mirza, with a close connection to Dubai spanning nearly 17 years, chose the city for her training project, establishing an academy to popularize tennis across diverse social segments. Dubai's infrastructure, flexibility, and world-class facilities make it an ideal destination for sports events, reinforcing the city's appeal for international athletes.
