A 24-year-old man from Montreal has initiated a class-action lawsuit against major social media platforms—TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook—alleging that their addictive nature has had a detrimental impact on his mental health. According to CTV News, the lawsuit contends that these platforms contribute significantly to productivity issues and body image problems.
The plaintiff began using social media in 2015 and reported experiencing significant challenges related to productivity and self-esteem. He claimed that his daily use of social networking apps extended up to four hours, although he has since reduced this to approximately two hours. Despite this reduction, he continues to struggle with productivity and sleep disturbances.
Philippe Brault, a representative from Lambert Avocats, the law firm handling the case, highlighted that social media’s pervasive influence extends beyond individual experiences. “In 2024, it's estimated that humanity will collectively spend 500 million years on social media,” Brault said. He argued that this widespread issue affects a large segment of the population, not just a few individuals. The firm has taken on the case to address what they see as a growing problem affecting many people.

Brault also pointed out that social media usage is prevalent among Canadian children, with 52 percent of those aged 7 to 11 engaging with these platforms. He emphasized the need for social media companies to prioritize user health and safety in their platform designs.
The lawsuit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages, alleging that the current design of these platforms exploits users' psychological vulnerabilities to increase engagement. Lambert Avocats aims to raise awareness about the risks associated with social media usage through media coverage, stressing the importance of understanding these risks and the potential impact on daily life.
